This month, Ashesi said goodbye to three members of our staff. Development Director, Matthew Taggart, Computer Science professor, Dr. Astrid Larssen, and Emerita Professor and Dean of Academic Affairs, Nana Araba Apt, have retired from their posts at Ashesi. Matt and Nana were key members of Ashesi’s founding team, and helped lead the university as it transitioned from small rented buildings to a world-class permanent campus. Dr. Larssen joined Ashesi in 2007, and has become a great mentor and advisor to many of Ashesi’s students and alumni.

Reflecting on Ashesi’s early years, Dr. Awuah said, “People remark about the success of Ashesi when they visit us and see our campus, but what is often missed is the sweat, the sacrifice, and the grit of the team

that worked to build this institution, and the community that is working to preserve this legacy for future generations.”

Professor Apt, Mr. Taggart, and Dr. Larssen, thank you for your work and dedication to Ashesi over the years. You will be deeply missed!

Send your best wishes to Matt, Nana and Astrid by posting a comment on our blog!

I was privileged to interact with each of these three individuals on various levels and I saw firsthand how their passion for Ashesi was demonstrated in their work and in their relationships with students. Thank you Prof. Apt, Matt, Astrid for being part of my Ashesi experience.

Hello Matthew Taggart, I hope my name rings a bell in your ears. The foundation of the positive image that I continue to hold about Ashesi was laid by your quick response and prompt actions to emails that I sent to Ashesi.

It is my prayer that as you depart, Ashesi will not forget that its public relations with non-members of Ashesi is one of the pillars that you built to create a huge positive image for Ashesi.

I wish you the best of life outside Ashesi. Congratulations for your wonderful contributions to Ghana’s development!!!

Matt and Patrick, as a fellow Seattlelite, a witness at fundraising events and student host, I am privy to your enormous energies, hard work and sacrifices that gave birth to Ashesi. It is a success story I keep repeating to other Africans here in Ghasea gatherings. Matt, congratulations!! you set out on a journey, and you finished it. The new Ashesi campus is a testament. I pray that, as always the case, your sacrifices will be richly rewarded wherever you may be. Please look me up if you’re back in Seattle.
